Scuola Media in Gordola
Extension and Rehabilitation of the Middle School in Gordola

The existing school buildings, which will not be demolished, are built on a strong axis oriented from N to S with an imposing presence of Mount Tamaro. It is the intention of the school to use this axis for students’ recreation and socialization activities. Our design seeks to add a more generous open entrance space on the northern edge of the existing axis to expand opportunities for outdoor activities and gathering, as well as to give a new character to the school.

Implicit in the competition program is the intention to expand the function of the school to accommodate public functions to serve the community. For this reason, all programmatic components to be used in addition to the schools, such as the Gymnasium, Library, Classroom Plus, and Great Hall, have been placed on the northern boundary, creating a central space to be used by students during school hours, but also as a meeting point before and after organized public events. This new central space organizes arrival to the compartment by foot and bicycle and offers a variety of open and covered spaces for spontaneous and organized activities. It has an ambivalent character. It can be intended as a plaza, but it also offers long views of the surrounding landscape adding a bucolic character.

Competition.
